First birthday gift ideas

First birthdays are the best. Its the celebration of getting through that first year for the mum (so tough I know), and the celebration of the once teeny tiny baby becoming a toddler. Developing their own personality and independence, it is the cutest age. So what do you buy them for their first birthday? I have been asked this question a million times, especially since Savannah recently turned one.

The first birthday for a second child (or third or fourth for that matter) is a tough one as they will already have everything. And I really do mean everything, from their older sibling(s). From the hand me down clothes to the toys and books, it is unlikely that they will actually need anything of their own. But it is nice to get them some new bits to wear/play with.

I found it quite difficult to suggest things for friends and family to buy for Savannah’s first birthday. I am a huge fan of recycling and have used all of Athena’s old things for her, particularly toys and books. The thing is, if you buy well, it is very easy to reuse things and they will last for a really long time. We have lots of wooden toys, soft toys and books that have lasted through many years of happy play.

With that in mind, I have created an edit of things that I know my children have loved (we have a lot on the list already) and would love. I rarely buy plastic things, unless I can’t find a wooden alternative. And I always try to get things that are educational and will last for years. One of my favourite websites for children’s presents is Smallable. It stocks a fantastic range of really good quality gifts and it categorises everything for you from age range to hobby to type (ie musical, educational etc). So, if you’re in the market for a first birthday present then look no further than the pieces below.
